MASSAGE

What a massage does for you.

Massage is generally considered part of complementary and alternative medicine. It's increasingly being offered along with standard treatment for a wide range of medical conditions and situations. Studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension. While more research is needed to confirm the benefits of massage, some studies have found massage may also be helpful for:

  • Anxiety

  • Digestive disorders

  • Headaches

  • Insomnia related to stress

  • Myofascial pain syndrome

  • Parenthesis and nerve pain

  • Soft tissue strains or injuries

  • Sports injuries

  • Temporomandibular joint pain

Lower back or upper back pain can be caused by a variety of problems with any parts of the complex, interconnected network of spinal muscles, nerves, bones, discs or tendons in the lumbar spine.

The Muscular System

Some massage movements relax and stretch muscles, reducing muscular tension and cramp. Massage also makes muscles more flexible by reducing muscle tone. Muscles tired by exercise are more quickly restored by massage than by rest. Back massage therapy is an extremely useful therapy. Many people suffer from back pain due to the jobs that involve sitting in one position for long hours. One of the best benefits of a back massage is that it feels good. Sometimes you just need to take a little time to relax.

FACIAL MASSAGE

Have a regular professional face massage. This is the best skin regime. A massage stimulates the muscles and lymphatic system. Every area of the body responds to facial massage. It makes the face glow and takes the tiredness and sluggishness away. Be happy. The "ecology" of your mind and heart is fundamental: your face represents what you feel and think. If you are not at peace, have unresolved issues or are full of resentment it will manifest itself on your face, no matter how many products you use or what else you do. Whether you practise meditation, breathing, go for healing sessions, nothing will make you more beautiful than a sense of harmony. When you wake up, think, "How am I going to spend this 24 hours? I am going to be happy, taking control over circumstances around me."

HOT STONE MASSAGE

Eden Therapy Clinic in the wintertime recommends this therapy.

Hot stone massage is a natural therapy in which warmed stones are positioned on parts of the client's body of to maximise the therapeutic benefit. The stones used are typically river rocks or other very smooth-surfaced stones made of basalt. These stones are heated in sanitising water before use. The high iron content in basalt helps the stones retain heat during the massage. Hot stone massages are beneficial on both physical and psychological levels.

Is It Painful?

The hot stones are never rough. They are smooth and typically several inches long. The stones are warmed in an electrical heater so the temperature can be controlled. If the stones are too hot, be sure to let the massage therapist know immediately.

A hot stone massage may begin with classic massage techniques to prepare the body's muscle tissue.

Some additional tips on making the most out of your massage:

  • Don't eat a heavy meal before the massage.

  • Let your therapist know if the stones are too warm or the pressure is too intense.

  • If it's your first time at the clinic or spa, arrive at least 10 minutes early to complete the necessary forms. Otherwise, arrive 5 minutes early so you can have a few minutes to rest and relax before starting the massage.

Always check with your doctor before getting a hot stone massage; individuals with certain conditions--including pregnant women and people with high blood pressure--are advised to avoid this type of therapy.
